Do Something

What if the years you're waiting to "figure it out" are the years God is actually calling you to move?

We recently finished our Ecclesiastes series, and one verse has stuck with me ever since:

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, "I have no pleasure in them" (Ecclesiastes 12:1, ESV)

One of my greatest joys as a pastor is watching people become who God intended them to be, so they can impact the world. There is nothing wrong with wanting your life to matter, or to be great. The wrong thinking comes when we ask, "How do I become great for myself?" instead of "How do I make God great in my life?"

I believe in our church right now, especially our youth and young professionals. Scripture tells us that God has placed desires in your heart, and a person of understanding draws them out. God has made you unique and gifted to make much of Jesus in the world, and I want to be a source that helps you draw that out.

Here are two things that will help.

1. Change What You're Praying For

Many of us pray with a me-centered theology: "God, if I do these things for you, give me these things and make me great."

Instead, try praying this way:

"God, thank you for what you have done for me. I want you to live in me and through me. How do I make you great and famous in my life?"

It's about His glory, not your own. Not "how do I make much of myself," but "how do I make much of you?"

Start here: Pray and ask God how He has made you unique in your gifting, opportunities, and desires.

2. Take a Leap of Faith and Do Something

This step doesn't always feel spiritual, but stepping out in faith pleases God and impacts others. You don't need every answer before you move. You just need to be willing to take the next step.

Two examples I've watched play out:

Maggie Fink was sixteen years old when she came to TDC. Our church wasn't even a year old yet, and we needed a female vocalist. Maggie didn't feel ready. She said yes anyway. Today she's a godly young married woman and a gospel powerhouse who has impacted thousands.

Caden Davis was a kicker in college, and for years his sense of worth rose and fell with whether a leather ball went through the uprights. Somewhere along the way, that changed. He found a peace tied to the finished work of Christ, a peace that doesn't move no matter what happens on the field, because he knows he's a beloved child of God. That peace led him to take a leap of faith into full-time ministry, where he now helps others discover their identity in Christ the same way he found his.

What This Could Look Like in Your Life

You don't need a stage or a title to take this step. It might look like:

  • Starting a lunch conversation with a coworker about what God's been doing in your life

  • Using a skill you already have, cooking, coaching, organizing, building, to serve a ministry at TDC

  • Mentoring a younger student or athlete the way someone once poured into you

  • Opening your home for a group instead of waiting until it feels "ready"

  • Sending the text you've been putting off, inviting a friend to church or to talk about faith

None of these require you to have it all figured out. They just require you to do something.

God has uniquely wired you too. Don't wait for a perfect plan.

This week: pray and ask God how He's made you unique, then take one step of faith with what He shows you.
